Trip Basics: Physical Conditioning
|
- You need not be a serious cyclist to do this trip! That being said, 300 miles over
four days is nothing to sneeze at, and it will require advance preparation. See
Stats’ Guide to Training and Conditioning for more information.
- Bottom line: ride your bike! The more the better. You should be able to relatively
easily complete long rides (50+ miles), as our average day on the trip is 75 miles.
You also need to be able to average 12 or 13 mph on those rides at a minimum (experienced
riders on the trip usually average 14 to 16, or faster). If you want to keep up
with the fast riders on the trip, you should be cross-training (running is good)
and training as much as you can in the off-season.
- We are scheduling some long group rides (including a 100-mile ride on the canal
in August), and we have regular weekend training rides leaving from the Kentlands
in Gaithersburg.
