Trip Basics: Your Bicycle
|
- You have many bike options for this trip. For a complete discussion of bikes and
gear options, see “Stats’ Gear Guide.” The most popular bikes on the trip these
days are hybrids and cyclocrosses. It is important to find the right balance of
comfort, durability, and speed.
- Of course, some things are not optional: a helmet, a comfortable seat, and a good
bike tune-up before the ride. You should also have the bare minimum tools/supplies:
extra inner tubes, tire repair kit, multi-tool, and pump to start. For safety’s
sake, I would also add front and rear lights (there are a few dark tunnels on this
trip).
- And don’t forget to hydrate: two water bottles mounted on the bike is a good idea,
and a larger hydration pack that you wear on your back (e.g., a Camelbak) is an
even better idea. You’ll also need a rack that can hold packs big enough to carry
your stuff (although we’ve become quite efficient at packing!).
